Caring for bamboo in 60 seconds: dishwashers, oil and three mistakes

Bamboo tableware has a single requirement: it must not stay wet. Almost everything else follows from that one rule. Here is a routine that takes a minute.

The routine after a meal

  1. Take off the suction base, if it is removable. It takes three seconds and stops moisture collecting underneath.
  2. Rinse with warm water and wash with a mild detergent and a soft sponge. No scouring creams and not the rough side of the sponge.
  3. Wipe it with a cloth — straight away, not later. This is the one step parents skip, and the one that genuinely counts.
  4. Leave it in the air, face down on a cloth, until it is completely dry.

If you are short of time: better to just rinse and wipe than to leave it soaking for later.

The dishwasher: the short answer

No. Never, not even on a short cycle, not even on the top rack. Heat and long exposure to moisture delaminate the wood. This is the commonest reason for a plate that cracks after six months.

When and what to oil with

When the surface goes dry, matt and lighter in colour — usually every few weeks with daily use.

  • Use an oil suitable for food contact: mineral oil for wooden boards, or coconut oil.
  • Apply a thin layer with a kitchen cloth, leave it for half an hour, then wipe off the excess.
  • Don’t use olive or sunflower oil — they go rancid over time and start to smell unpleasant.

Stubborn stains and smells

  • Staining from carrot or tomato: rub with half a lemon, leave for ten minutes, rinse, wipe dry.
  • A smell of fish or eggs: sprinkle with bicarbonate of soda, dampen slightly into a paste, leave for ten minutes, rinse.
  • A general refresh: wipe with a cloth dampened in vinegar, then rinse and dry immediately.

Three mistakes that destroy a plate

1. Soaking

A plate waiting in the sink soaks up water. That is the fastest route to delamination and mould.

2. The microwave

Uneven heating dries the wood out from the inside. Heat the food separately.

3. Drying on a radiator or in the oven

It seems logical — wet things need drying. In reality it is a temperature shock that causes cracks. Air drying is the only correct option.

When care no longer helps

If a crack appears through the material, or fibres lift, or a smell lingers even after cleaning, the plate has reached the end of the road. How to tell cosmetic wear from the real thing is covered in the piece on how long it lasts.
