BLW or purées? An honest look, without the hype

Online, this choice is presented as a matter of belief. In reality it is a matter of how much time you have, how well you cope with mess, and what your child is like. Both approaches get you to the same place.

What BLW looks like in practice

BLW (baby-led weaning) means your child eats on their own from the start, with their fingers, taking pieces of food they can grip. There is practically no spoon in a parent’s hand.

What you get

  • Your child gets used to different textures early, which later means fewer problems moving on to lumps.
  • Meals are more independent — your child eats while you eat.
  • Less preparation: mostly your child eats a version of your own meal.

What you are in for

  • A great deal more mess, especially for the first three months.
  • Less control over how much your child actually eats — which for many parents is the hardest part.
  • A need for reliable knowledge about the size and shape of the pieces.

What purées look like in practice

The classic approach: the food is puréed, the parent feeds the child with a spoon, and the thickness increases gradually.

What you get

  • A clear view of the quantity — reassuring, particularly with children who are gaining weight slowly.
  • Less mess and shorter meals.
  • An easy start with children who are still a little less dexterous at six months.

What you are in for

  • More preparation and more washing up.
  • Moving on to lumps is a separate step you have to take deliberately — leave it too long and some children find it harder to accept.
  • A greater chance that the meal turns into a negotiation over the number of spoonfuls.

The combination most people actually choose

From talking to parents we know that the large majority do both: purée for part of the meal, pieces for the rest. That isn’t a compromise born of defeat — it is a sensible choice that takes the advantages of both.

A typical day looks like this: pieces of fruit and bread in the morning, purée with a spoon at midday, pieces again in the evening. Your child learns both, and at one meal at least you have a sense of how much has gone in.

If you are deciding under pressure from those around you: there is no evidence that either approach leads in the long run to a healthier or less fussy child. Decide on the basis of what is workable in your own day.

Where it most often goes wrong

With BLW: expecting too much on quantity

In the first month your child eats very little. If you expect BLW to replace a meal, you will be disappointed. Milk remains the main source of food.

With purées: sticking with a smooth texture for too long

If the food is still completely smooth at ten months, the transition is harder. Increase the thickness gradually, even if your child doesn’t seem keen at first.

With both: going too fast

A new food every day sounds productive, but it gives your child no time to accept anything. The same food, offered several times in a week, works better.

Which tableware for which approach

Here the difference is quite practical:

  • Purées: a suction bowl with a rim high enough for you and your child to load the spoon against. Depth matters more than compartments.
  • BLW: a plate with compartments, so foods don’t mix and your child can see what is on offer. A low rim, so they can pick up a piece.
  • A combination: both, or a plate with compartments where one is deep enough for purée.

The same holds for both approaches: if the tableware moves, the meal takes longer. Why that has such an effect is covered in the piece about the first meal at the table.

How to decide in five minutes

  1. How much mess can you take every day? Not much → start with purées.
  2. Are you worried about how much food goes in? Yes → purées, at least for one meal.
  3. Does your child sit stably and grip objects? Yes → BLW is workable right now.
  4. Do you have time for separate cooking? No → BLW is less work.

Whatever you choose, you can change it in a month. This is not a decision that marks you for life.
